Event Description

Scalar fields coupled to Standard Model particles constitute a large class of dark energy candidates which could explain the cosmic acceleration. Such fields typically requre non-linear self-interactions which make them massive in high-density regions of space, allowing them to evade fifth force constraints on laboratory and astrophysical scales through the chameleon mechanism. If chameleon fields also couple to the electromagnetic field strength, then photons can oscillate into chameleon particles, which can be trapped and detected in an afterglow experiment. I will discuss constraints on chameleon models through fifth force tests as well as afterglow experiments.
