Event Description

What is the main drive of a modern scientist? Passion? Ambition? Wrong! It is getting a bunch of numbers as high as possible: citations, H-index, etc. These science metrics are indeed useful, but they need to be taken with care. Based on large-scale mining of citation data, I will explore the processes driving scientific impact and change. I will introduce citation-based indicators of scientific impact, and present their properties and flaws. I will show how reputation can artificially boost the impact of a work and some consequences of the exponential growth of scientific output. Finally I will prove that you will never get the Nobel Prize, sadly.
