Anders Carlsson (physics), John Cooper (biochemistry and biophysics at Med School) and Philip Bayly (mechanical engineering) will explore the structure and function of the nanomachine driving endocytosis in the model organism budding yeast, through a combination of mathematical modeling and quantitative experimental studies. In addition to determining the mechanisms of endocytosis, understanding the endocytic protein network will clarify general principles that govern the function of other, more complex, cellular protein networks.
